She was inspired by the Japanese philosophy

Hilal Karakaş, fourth year student at Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Izmir University of Economics (IUE), has been awarded the special jury award at the 7th House-wear and Beachwear Design Contest held by Denizli Exporters Association. Karakaş reached success with her design she created with using natural fabrics inspired by the Wabi-Sabi, an ancient Japanese philosophy focused on accepting the imperfect and transient nature of life. “To be deemed worthy of such an award at a prestigious competition where 210 people applied nationwide, made me extremely happy. I will continue to work in fashion and develop new projects,” said Karakaş.
Hilal Karakaş, who always had a keen interest in drawing and wanted a degree in fashion, gone into IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design in 2016 with full scholarship. Being a successful student throughout her university life, she always improved herself with the support of her teachers. Following the latest fashion trends and focusing on different designs, Karakaş worked day and night for three months for the House-wear and Beachwear Design Contest held by Denizli Exporters Association. Karakaş has won the special jury award with her designs she created by using natural and linen fabrics at the finals that took place on November 1.
MY HARD WORK PAID OFF
Reporting that she was very happy because her hard work paid off, Karakaş stated that she wants to pursue her career in fashion. Karakaş said, “I used to express my emotions through drawing even when I was a little girl. I can say that I have always been interested in art. I applied for this competition online first. I was in the final 20 out of 210 applicants, and I was called for an interview in Denizli where they asked me why I preferred such a collection. I was one of the 10 contestants to pass the interview. I was successful at the competition and reached my goal. It made me very happy. I am most thankful to all my teachers who always supported me in achieving this success.”
RAISING UNIQUE INDIVIDUALS
Prof. Elvan Özkavruk Adanır, Head of IUE Department of Fashion and Textile Design, said, “Our students make us very proud with their achievements. We are working hard to raise and train individuals who are going to make a difference with their designs and projects needed by the fashion industry. Our students shine out not only in competitions in Turkey, but in international competitions as well. They represent our county and university successfully. I believe we will continue to add new success stories.”
